The six leadership styles

This quiz uses six styles described by psychologist Daniel Goleman in the Harvard Business Review article “Leadership That Gets Results” (2000). No style is right or wrong: each one works in some situations and backfires in others. The statements in the quiz are our own.

Visionary
Gives the team a clear direction and lets people find their own way to get there. Works best: when the team needs a new direction, during change, or when people have lost sight of why their work matters.
Coaching
Develops people for the long term by helping them find their strengths and grow. Works best: when people want to grow and the deadline is not tomorrow.
Affiliative
Puts people and harmony first, builds trust and eases tension. Works best: to rebuild trust after a conflict, or to support a team through a hard period.
Democratic
Builds commitment by asking for ideas and deciding together. Works best: when you need buy-in or fresh ideas, or you are not sure of the best way forward.
Pacesetting
Sets high standards and a fast pace, often leading by example. Works best: with a skilled, motivated team that needs quick results.
Directive
Takes charge, gives clear instructions and expects them to be followed. Works best: in a real emergency, a turnaround, or a clear safety or compliance issue.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a best leadership style?

No. Each style fits some situations and hurts in others. The research behind the model suggests that the most effective leaders use several styles and switch depending on the people and the moment.

How accurate is this quiz?

It is a quick reflection tool, not a validated psychometric test. Your scores show how often you say you use each style (0–100), not how you compare with other people.

I don’t manage anyone yet. Can I take it?

Yes. Think of projects, groups or volunteer work you have led, or how you would act. Many people take it before a first management role.

Do you keep my answers?

No. The quiz runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers unless you share a link, which contains only your six scores.

How can I find out how my team sees my leadership?

Ask them. A 360 feedback collects anonymous views from your manager, peers and direct reports, and shows where they differ from your own view. You can run one free on this site.
