360 Feedback Questions for Doctors

17 ready-to-use questions, example comments and tips — plus a free tool that runs the survey and writes the report for you.

Doctors are assessed constantly on clinical knowledge, but rarely hear how nurses, pharmacists, junior colleagues and other specialists experience working with them. Those colleagues see the ward round, the handover at 2am and the conversation with a worried family. A 360 gathers their views anonymously so a doctor can see patterns that no single supervisor would notice. These questions focus on observable professional behaviours, not clinical judgement.

Tips for a useful 360

  • Invite a mix of professions: nurses, other doctors of different grades, pharmacists and the clinical lead or supervisor.
  • Ask reviewers to think about the last few months of shared shifts or clinics, not a single memorable incident.
  • Keep the 360 for development and reflection. If it is part of appraisal or revalidation, check what your regulator or employer requires.

Frequently asked questions

Who should give 360 feedback to a doctor?

People who work with them regularly: other doctors of senior and junior grades, nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals and administrative staff such as ward clerks or medical secretaries. Aim for at least three people in each group.

Does a 360 measure clinical competence?

No. Colleagues can comment on communication, teamwork, reliability and professionalism, but not reliably on clinical decision-making. Clinical skills are assessed through supervision, audits and formal assessments. A 360 adds a different view alongside them.

Can a free 360 tool be used for medical appraisal?

It can support reflection and give you material to discuss, but many regulators and employers require a specific approved process for formal colleague and patient feedback. Check those requirements before relying on any tool for revalidation.
